Building a greener future today.
Westfield's goal for the New UTC is simple: Build the greenest shopping center possible. By using evnironmentally-friendly designs and green building principals, the New UTC will be a smart growth project and a model of sustainability. The United States Green Building Council has approved the project at the Stage 1 level, confirming that once built as proposed, it will achieve LEED for Neighborhood Development certification at the Gold level, only the fifth such project in the United States to receive this designation.
The New UTC, reflecting Westfield's global leadership position in energy conservation will feature:
• Solar panels covering up to 10 acres on top of parking decks, generating enough energy to power more than 1,000 homes.
• Use of "cool roof" technology to reduce heat absorption, minimize the need for air conditioning and reduce the heat island effect.
• Installation of more than 2,000 compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) and other types of energy-efficient bulbs.
Westfield will also make better use of one of our most precious resources with water-smart features, such as:
• Use of reclaimed water (instead of potable water) for irrigation, reducing fresh water consumption by half for the retail porton.
• Use of indigenous, drought-resistant planting to minimize irrigation needs.
• Installation of dual-flush toilets, waterless urinals and other water-conserving plumbing fixtures to increase water savings by 25%.
Widespread use of environmentally-friendly materials and construction practices to be incorporated include:
• Recycling at least 50% of all construction waste, with a target of 75%.
• Use of locally-sourced building materials to reduce and shorten truck trips.
• Recycling all cardboard, the largest waste material generated at the center.
• Use of certified sustainable building materials, such as accredited timber and other products certified by SMART, California Gold Standard and the Cradle to Cradle program.
